Golf Club’s 130th ANNIVERSARY
Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club celebrated its 130th Anniversary on Saturday 17th July.
We are the 5th oldest Golf Club in England, having been formed in 1880 by Lord Elcho. In 1889 the Club Captain was Arthur Balfour M.P., who went on to become Prime Minister.
To mark the anniversary, members played a competition with many of them dressed in costumes from the 1880’s. Plus fours, jackets, waistcoats and flat caps were to be seen on the course as well as ladies in long skirts.
In the evening there was a Barbeque at the clubhouse with entertainment by the popular 1960’s group ‘The Bruvvers’ (who used to perform with Joe Brown).
Club Captain, Chris Pearson said, “Our club is steeped in history and it was very appropriate that we marked the 130th year of the formation of the club. Many members entered the spirit of the occasion and made it a day to remember. I very much hope that the club is still here in 130 years time”.

On Saturday 19th June Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club held their annual ‘Stud Bar Challenge’ Golf Day to raise funds for charity and for the Junior Section of the Club. This year’s nominated charity was East Anglian Children’s Hospitals (EACH) and the event raised over £700.
176 members took part, playing in teams of 4, with the best two scores on each hole to count for team prizes in addition to individual prizes. Play started at 7am and did not finish until after 6pm and the gusty wind and occasional heavy showers did not dampen the enthusiasm of those taking part. Players were invited to ‘Beat the Pro’ by competing against one of the
Club’s professionals, Andrew Robinson, in hitting a tee shot closer to the hole on the 12th green. There was also a competiton on the 9 hole Kingsfleet Course for beginners in the Junior Section and a putting competition on the practice putting green.
The day was about more than just golf. A marquee was set up near the clubhouse where members and their guests were entertained throughout the day by the band, Infrared. Golfers were able to get an ice cream at the 3rd tee or a snack from Barbeques on the 9th tee and as they left the 12th green. Stalls were set up around the club house for members to try their hand at a coconut shy, ‘Splat The Rat’, ‘Keep a Steady Hand’ and ‘Connect 4’.
In the evening there was a Disco in the marquee and a Hog Roast. A raffle, for which prizes were donated by club members, was held and the day finished with a spectacular firework display on the course.
Club Captain, Chris Pearson, said ‘This event has become one of the most popular in the club calendar. It is a day when members can take part in a fun competition and enjoy themselves throughout the day whilst raising money for a very good cause and supporting our promising young players’.
NB – The ‘Stud Bar’ is the ‘casual’ bar at the Golf Club and the event is organised by members who regularly use this bar. The event started 16 years ago to raise funds to buy an electric golf buggy for a disabled member of the club. The size of the event has escalated each year and a different charity is selected annually as well as providing financial support for the club’s thriving Junior Section.

GIRLS IN GOLF
On Sunday 11th May Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club entertained 25 girls aged between 11 and 15 years old.
After their arrival at the Club the Junior Organiser, Wendy Wootton and the Club’s Assistant Professional Andrew Robinson welcomed them to the Club and then took them down to the Practice Ground where they were given 90 minutes golf tuition. For a majority of the girls, this was the first time they had held a golf club and we saw some promising beginners.
The girls then had a light lunch in the Clubhouse and for the afternoon they were shown how to make a beaded bracelet by Tessa Oxlade and then were able to design and make their own to take home. Gemma Salmon the owner of Tranquility Beauty Rooms and her staff then spent time decorating the girls nails.
It was a great afternoon with the girls going home with very pretty and very differently designed bracelets and, of course, beautifully decorated nails.
Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club will continue encouraging these non-golfing girls to take up the game, by offering them 5 weeks golf tuition and the chance to play on the 9 hole Kingsfleet course.
From the day the Club has already had three girls who wish to join the Juniors section where they will be playing on the Kingsfleet course.
